Cross Cultural Experience:Dr Katherine Thompson has lived cross-culturally in Kazakstan for 18 months. Prior to this, she had been on 3 short-term mission trips to: an aboriginal settlement in WA, Thailand, and Kazakstan. She has also travelled to visit a missionary in Russia. All these experiences inform her work. She has been supporting missions organisations with Psychosocial Assessments, training, debriefing and pre and post assignment counselling since 2010. It includes writing comprehensive, holistic assessments for candidates wishing to go overseas to work. She also offers counselling for issues that arise from pre-departure assessments to up-skill people before they leave, as well as debriefing and counselling for returning staff. She sees a lot of Missionary Kids (MKs) who experience issues that are associated with their time living in another country and the impact this has on their adjustment and development. Katherine currently offers: Assessments - Predeparture for missions, Ministry candidates Training - Teamwork & conflict resolution skills, Christ-Centred Mindfulness, Mental Health Debriefing - adults and MKs Counselling - medicare rebatable, SKYPE, for adults and MKS 12+ years Counselling areas - mental health adults (+ youth mental health), burnout, grief and loss, transition, skill-building, spiritual disciplines, life balance, etc.

KAY DJOEANDY

Cross Cultural Experience: Kay Djoeandy has worked in Kenya in a pastoral capacity for 6 years before she was trained as a professional counsellor with a particular emphasis on integrating faith in ethical practice. She is familiar with the American, Australian and East African cultures. Currently, she is working with SIM to help candidates prepare for their cross-cultural communication.

DR ROGER VAN DER VEEN

Qualifications – BA, BSW (Hons), MSW, PhD. Member of the Australian Association of Social Workers.

Cross-Cultural Experience – Dr Roger Van Der Veen has worked as a counsellor, social worker, and facilitator in Canada and Australia, including seven years as a university lecturer and ten years as a clinical educator. His employment history includes counselling, hospital work, mental health, child protection, community development, teaching and lecturing, research, and the settlement of migrants and humanitarian entrants. He has taken part in several short-term mission trips to China, Mongolia, and Vanuatu and has been working with Christian cross-cultural workers since 2005.
